Itinerary:
The morning will be spent at Nash Point, within the spectacular Glamorgan Heritage Coast, on sites around the lighthouse and Cwm Nash. These include limestone grassland within a steep valley, mostly variations on mildly base-enriched dry neutral grassland, with scrub encroachment and wooded valley further away from the sea.
After lunch, the group will travel to the Special Area of Conservation at Cefn Cribwr, near Bridgend. Here the rhos grassland will be investigated. This is one of four sites representing Molinia meadows in south and central Wales, one of the major UK strongholds for this habitat type. These are biodiverse areas with an impressive mix of base-rich and heathy vegetation and may represent the original grassland vegetation of this region. At the sites to be visited, viper's-grass Scorzonera humilis and Carex montana have been recorded.
Mild to moderate exertion with a steep climb down into and up out of the valley at Nash Point. The valley can suffer a strong on-shore wind and light may be reflected strongly from the limestone cliffs, so sunscreen and a warm jacket are advisable.
